Alvin is a tool used by marine biologists to explore
the unknown deep waters of the sea. This tool captures the life of creatures
that live in unbearable living conditions such as extreme water pressure,
little sunlight, and toxic chemicals. Alvin is used to conduct research and is
owned by the United States Navy.
In the movie, Alvin was able to enter the hydrothermal
vents of the Mid Ocean Ridge. The Mid Ocean Ridge is where the Earth’s crust was
built. IT is located in the center of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean where there
is Volcanic activity. Chemicals are found here. Especially the dangerously toxic
chemical of H2S Hydrogen Sulfide.
Alvin is made by rubber bands held together
tightly. This is adaptable to anything a marine divers desires to do in the
deep waters. Alvin can go13,000 feet below sea level. The pressure of Alvin is
enough to crush a tank, but it can sustain! Go ALVIN!
Descends 9 North. Remember, Alvin can go into
places that are less accessible than places that can enter the moon. Alvin sees
the seas that no person may have ever seen before.
Deep Sea Hydrothermal vents:
Deals with volcanic rock deep within the
earths crust. The geysers in Yellowstone national park is an example of how
these works in the seafloor. They are
filled with mineral-rich chemicals that hold a community of organisms that can
live in these particular environments. Temperatures can reach as high as 750
degrees in the
waters.
Holger
Jannasch:
He says
that, “Science
is an adventure, not a career” (Jannasch).
He has
made 23 Alvin dives where he desired to study deep sea bacteria. He found that the high pressures and very
cold temperatures slow bacteria metabolism by 100 times.
At first he was not able to bring up bacteria to the surface before they decomposed when reaching the top,but eventually he and his team was able to preserve their purity and study them in lavatory above their natural environment.
Sea dandelion:
Looks
like one organism but it is really just a cluster or organisms bundled up
together. This organisms is found in the
deep seas in the hydrothermal vents. They can survive off some of the most
toxic chemicals in the sea.
Chemosynthesis:
Instead of photosynthesis, the deep sea
creatures receive their energy through chemicals and no sunlight. The organism found
in the hydrothermal vents have this characteristic.
